Carhaul Director’s Hard Sell on Concessions
July 16, 2008: Carhaul Director Fred Zuckerman made $230,695 from members’ dues last year, but some members think he actually works for the employers.
Over the past week, he’s travelled from local to local, working to divide members and ram through a long list of concessions.
When members ask a tough question of him, he has three ready answers: “You’ve been listening to TDU.” Or, “We don’t write down everything we negotiate, so trust me.” Or, “The national committee will protect you.”
Then the Teamster website posts a fairy-tale account of what happened at each meeting. It’s almost as if Teamsters are so doggone happy, they want to carry Zuckerman around on their shoulders.
Zuckerman is obsessed with Teamsters for a Democratic Union: he can’t stand the fact that carhaulers are spreading the truth about the contract.
He also feels the need to lie about St. Louis Local 604 Secretary-Treasurer John Thyer. You can read Thyer’s response here.
Teamsters can read. They know concessions when they see them. They're on the page in black and white. No “interpretation” from Fred Zuckerman is going to wipe them away. A strong No vote will send Zuckerman back to the table to get the language he claims is there. Make them put it in writing.
