June 12, 2008: As the Teamster strike against PTS nears the end, Teamsters report seeing nonunion rigs pulling cars and trucks out of a few production plants and ports.
This trend must be stopped now. This strike is to save good Teamster jobs!
In Detroit, United Road Service has been spotted hauling Fords. Reportedly Accurate Auto Carrier will get a piece of that action, also. Other nonunion rigs have been seen at a few other locations.
The strike to drive PTS out of business makes sense only if the work goes to legitimate union carriers, and our union enforces Article 5 of the carhaul national contract to ensure that PTS Teamster follow their work to the new carriers.
The time is now to put the heat on the shippers to make sure this plan works. Recently the International Union bragged in a press release how they did exactly that, with the help of the UAW, to protect Teamsters in Local 89, the home local of Carhaul Director Fred Zuckerman. It's time to do the same for all PTS Teamsters.
Also, it's time to make sure that the union carriers—Cassens, Jack Cooper and Allied—comply with Article 5 and put our Teamster brothers and sisters at PTS working at the same traffic that they hauled for PTS.
The strike is nearing its end because PTS will soon close. Its largest creditor, Black Diamond, is demanding that it immediately liquidate so they can sell the assets and get back some of their money.
Let's make sure that the strike accomplishes its goal: all PTS work must go to union carriers, and PTS Teamsters have the right to follow their work.
The time to protect good Teamster jobs is now.
